1. Understand what a tag is. A tag, also known as a hashtag, is a “symbol” that allows web search engines to find and categorize messages, keywords and in the case of Instagram, pictures.
A hashtag is created when you attach the symbol (#) to a keyword.
If you attach #puppy to one of your pictures, any user anywhere in the world who searches for "puppy" will easily find your picture along with other user’s pictures using the same keyword.
2. Understand how to tag a photo. You can add hashtags to any of your own photos on Instagram by including them in the caption of your photo or in a comment under the photo.
Simply type the hash symbol (#) before any keyword that is relevant to your photo. For example, if you're sharing a photo of the sun setting over the ocean, tag it with #sunset and #ocean.
You can go back and tag old photos on Instagram simply by entering the tag in the comments section under the photo.
You are not allowed to tag other people's photos on Instagram. You can tag words in the comment box under people's photos, but the Instagram interface won't recognize them
3. Understand why people tag photos. People tag photos to help other users to find them and their photos. The benefit of tags is that they link photos that share common interests, a shared phenomenon, or a pop-culture sensation.
By searching a particular tag, Instagram users can find images they like and discover other Instagrammers to follow.
Instagram is essentially a social media tool. By tagging their photos with popular tags, users can maximize their visibility, thus increasing their number of followers.
4. Understand how to search for photos using tags. You can search for photos by going into your profile tab and tapping on "Search Instagram" and then on ‘’Tags”. At this point all you need to do is type the word you’re looking for and the results will appear below the search window.
If you want to find pictures of cakes, type #cake or #cakes into the search bar and every photo that's been tagged with that keyword will appear.
You can also click on any photo's tag to see all the photos that have been tagged with the same keyword.
5. Understand how to use tags - not abuse them. You should always tag your photos on instagram. Tagging increases your visibility and helps you to connect with other users. However, try not to abuse the tagging system either:
It is possible to add up to 30 tags to each photo. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Over tagging your photos makes your comments too long and boring and users won't bother reading them. Try to limit your tagging to 2-3 tags per photo.
Try to keep tags relevant to your photo’s subject matter so that it will appear to users within the relevant context.[2] Using tags that have nothing to do with the photo renders the whole process meaningless.
